Use this quick guide to help you pick the right words to describe yourself in your profile

Describe yourself.

How could two simple words asking you to write about the one thing you know better than anyone else in the world cause so much frustration? Well, they can - and they should.

Describing yourself the right way in your profile can make or break your chances of finding someone who is right for you. I don't mean to put the pressure on! Afterall, you will never write a good profile if you are trying to be perfect. All I am trying to stress is that you should take the time to do it right.

You might have found a format you could copy and paste into your profile. "My ideal first date is *BLANK*; My friends would describe me as *BLANK*; Things that I look for in a person are *BLANK*."

You might as well write, "I was forced into doing this by *BLANK* (but I really don't want to be here)." And no, it won't make you more appealing or look "cooler" if you sound disinterested.

Using a format to get you thinking isn't a bad idea, just don't make it plainly obvious you used one. No one wants to be with someone who needs help. Using a format in your online dating profile is like riding your bike with training wheels; ya, all the other kids without them have been through that stage, but it doesn't mean they will want to ride with you now. If you look new, you will only get interest from people looking for "fresh blood". This usually isn't a good thing.

So, your friends must like something about you - this is actually a good thing to think about when you are writing your profile. If they would describe you in a certain way then describe yourself in that way. You don't need to point it out. In other words, "My friends would describe me as generous," should just be, "I am generous". It's to the point and it shows confidence. It shows you have tossed those training wheels aside and are ready to play with the big (and better looking) kids.

I know that just sliced your word count in half and you're already bending your mind out of shape just to reach the minimum 200 words (or however many it is you need) - but this is a good thing. You should get use to spending some time and putting some thought into this.

If all else fails just tell it like it is. "I really hate writing these things.. I can't think of anything else to say about myself!" This isn't the greatest filler, but at least it makes you look humble.

Who wants a person who likes to talk about themself, anyway?
